How about that red hair, eh? Me and gweneth_syeira were talking about having red hair for rp characters and how common it is or isn't among canon characters, at least in SW. (And I can only think of one SW canon character that has red hair, and some accuse her of being a Mary Sue too.)

So how common is red hair among canon characters? Does red hair necessarily mean an OC is a Mary Sue? Discuss. ;)

I say it is...not that I'm trying to say that red hair should never be allowed...but if you think about it...how many of FOE and other RPGs do you see littered with RED, auburn, chestnut, etc, hair?

And dude. Auburn hair is rare. "true" auburn hair *pets auburn_hair * y'know? And if it isn't some shade of red, it's gotta be black, because, like OMGGGG!!!! You can't be SITH without black hair!!! It's like being a mopey goth w/o black nail polish!

Whatever happened to wild and colourful hair that DC and Marvel comics made everyone love?

Well like I told you, gweneth, I realized I don't have any characters with auburn/red hair. I should probably have one just cause I need a new hair color in my character pool. LOL.

See... I did have a character with auburn hair... but I think she's gonna be retired now. *sigh*

But I have characters with brown, blonde, white, auburn, black, multi-colored.

I think that kind of variety is good. I usually tend to think of characters with any oddly-colored hair as a probable Mary Sue, but it's not a definite thing. I think having a very small handful of characters that have red/multi-colored/"different" colored hair is fine...but like, if that's ALL someone has for their characters... I kinda wonder.

Red hair makes for Mary Sue when the OC interacts with a higher percentage of first tier characters. One of the few drop in red head characters I’ve ever seen work lately was in BSG’s second season, “Final Cut.” They introduce Lucy Lawless as a reporter/hidden Cylon, and she’s got red blonde hair. And she fits right in without being a Mary Sue. Mostly because they spend the entire episode without developing her character beyond a static reporter level, and then drop it on the audience, that oh wait, she’s a Cylon. It was a well crafted script.
